The North American Quilling Guild holds an annual competition for it’s members. There are 5 different levels and 8 different categories. The levels are Beginner Level (quilling less than 2 years); Intermediate Level (2–5 years); Accomplished Level (5+ years); and Champion Level (having won 1st Place in any Accomplished category).  Categories are Cards, Free Standing, Framed, Miniature, Quilling and Beyond, Jewelry Set, and Jewelry (single piece).  You can enter as many categories as you want, but only 1 piece per category. Although I’ve been a member since 2001, I didn’t submit anything for competition until 2011. That year I placed 3rd in two categories.

Currently I compete in 2 levels. For Cards, Miniature, Free Standing and Quilling & Beyond. I am in the Champion Level. For Framed, I am in the Accomplished Level. Jewelry and Jewelry Set.

2022 Champion Level, Card
The card category theme was “Down on the Farm”.
2019 Accomplished Level, Quilling and Beyond, 1st Place

These little ceramic vases are made by a local potter who sells in a gallery. I set the vases on a shelf and studied them for months. I made a bunch up to sell at Christmas and knew I wanted to put the orange one in the competition but I felt it needed to be more than just one. I quickly did up two more and here they are.
The requirements for Quilling and Beyond are that the majority of the piece is quilling.

santa 2018 Accomplished Level, Miniature, 1st Place
I made this specifically for the competition. I made it in one week working on it nights after I’d get home from work.
The requirements for Miniature is that it is no larger than 4x4x4 inches and is 100% paper.
2018 Accomplished Level, Framed, Did Not Place
This piece didn’t have the pizzazz that I had hoped for. I used Metallic paper, but in the format I used you can’t tell.
earrings 2018 Jewelry, Did Not Place
I was disappointed here. The earrings are amazing if you can hold them and look at them. Sadly I chose to display them in a velvet lined box.
Besides the findings, hooks and rings, the pieces have to be 100% paper.
2018 Champion Level, Card, 1st Place

The category for the cards this year was Texas, anything western. I had been wanting to make my dad a 8×10 silhouette of a rearing horse with the cowboy waving his hat. I hunted for years to find the right image. I finally found it when the Lone Ranger movie came out. Unfortunately, my dad passed before I could make it. Since the conference was in the Fort Worth/Dallas part of Texas, and that is where he called home, I figured this would be a good time to do a tribute to him. That I took 1st Place in the Champion level makes this card even more special to me. Needless to say, it is now in a shadow box with little things to remind us him.
The only requirement for Cards is that they must be 100% paper.

2017 Jewelry, 3rd Place

I made these Minions for a friend of mine and thought they were cute.  Since I finished them just before heading there, I decided to enter them.  I was shocked and pleased when they announced 3rd Place.  I never expected them to place because the other pieces were wonderful and these were just cute.

Jewelry is just 2 categories.  One is a single piece and the other is for multiple pieces such as necklace, bracelet and earring sets. Besides the findings, hooks and rings, the pieces have to be 100% paper.

Mandala 2017 Accomplished Level, Framed, Tied Honorable Mention

This year there were 17 entries in the Framed category.  It’s the most I’ve seen so I didn’t hold out much hope.  They announced 1, 2, and 3rd and I wasn’t called. But then they said that since there were so many votes for two others they were going to do something they don’t normally do and award Honorable Mention to 2 individuals.  I was surprised when they called my name.  I couldn’t be happier.

For the Framed category, everything in the frame must be 100% paper, no beads, no writing, just paper.

2016 Accomplished Level, Cards, 1st Place

The card category always has a theme that is selected by the hostess.  It generally has something to do with the area.  This year it was in Nashville, TN, so the theme was country music.  The cards have to be 100% paper, no beads, no writing, just paper.  So yes the guitar strings, fence, mountains and rope are all paper.

2016 Champion Level, Quilling and Beyond, 2nd Place

This was a fun piece.  It went together easily and I had fun adding the bees.  There are 4 can you find them all? And the butterfly wiggles when you touch the piece.  I have no idea where I found the pot, but it was perfect for this piece.

Quilling and Beyond is for any piece that contains objects other than paper.  In this case, wire and beads.

2016 Jewelry, 2nd Place

These were a last minute addition.  I had made several pairs for Christmas and they were well received.  This pair is made with Dutch gilded paper.  It has a blue metallic on one edge.  I alternated the pieces so that there was color on both sides.

2016 Accomplished, Free Standing, Didn’t Place.

The pumpkin is about 6 inches in diameter and about 5 inches tall.  This piece took me most of a year to complete, however I didn’t constantly work on it.  This year there were only 2 pieces in the category and the piece that won was outstanding, so no regrets.

2016 Accomplished, Framed, Didn’t Place

This piece I think was not understood and therefore didn’t do as well as it might have.  I made it for a friend who collects the French cars Citroën and cribbage boards.  I made the decoration in the blue, white and red of the French flag and the chevrons are the symbol for Citroën.  The chevrons are also a cribbage  board with pegs in the back of the frame.  It is all made of paper and put onto a wood plaque.

2011 Accomplished, Framed, 3rd Place

This was a trio of glass sun catchers.  The flowers and the bows are all paper on a glass background that can be hung anywhere.  This was my first competition so I was quite pleased with 3rd Place.

2011 Accomplished, Quilling and Beyond, 3rd Place

I had intended this to be in the free standing category, but because of the stand and 6 beads, it didn’t qualify.  My bad for not reading the rules better.  It did however place 3rd in the category so I was quite happy with that.

2008 Quill a Day Calendar

While this wasn’t exactly a competition, in a way it was. Only certain pieces were selected for the calendar.  I was lucky enough to have 2 pieces selected.  One was the Butterfly Mobile and the other was the Dragonfly Mobile.  And one of the dragonflies made the outside of the box.  The calendar pages have cut pieces that you pull off and it came with a tool to use, you just supplied the glue.  Because of the number of pieces, these were more for show so you could make your own using your own paper.
