Competition PiecesI began entering into the NAQGCon competitions in 2011. That year I entered 2 pieces, both took 3rd Place. The next competition I entered wasn’t until 2016 when I entered 5 pieces and took one 1st Place, and two 2nd Places. Then in 2017 I entered 2 pieces and both placed. One took Honorable Mention and the other took 3rd place. |

JewelryThis is wearable jewelry. Quilling can be quite durable and yet be so very delicate at the same time. These are various sizes but are no bigger than 2 inches long or in diameter. The black background necklaces are from Quilled Creations. |
BoxesThese boxes are made of paper mache and balsa wood. Some have a satin fabric lining. Most are 3 1/2 inches in diameter although a few of them are about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. |

General HolidayHolidays seems to be what I like to do. It is my second biggest category, so much so that I broke it down into 5 categories. This one has everything except Christmas. The pumpkin is one of my favorite pieces. I worked on it off and on for a year. It is approximately 6 inches in diameter. |
Christmas Gift TagsThe gift tags are popular and fun. Coming up with ideas that are quick and easy is sometimes a challenge, but by adding other mediums like stamping and beads I think it makes them look more complete. |
Christmas OrnamentsThis category is anything Christmas that didn’t fit the other 3 categories. I think the earrings are fun and the candy canes are the most popular. I’ve done a lot of experimenting here using different surfaces to attach the quilling to, some worked better than others. It’s all about learning what works and what doesn’t. |
Santa’s and SnowmenSantas and Snowmen is my second largest of the Holiday category. Most of them are between 1.5 and 2 inches tall. Last year I started making the trees fringed so that they looked more real. The one to the left is about 6 inches tall. We liked it so much that it became our Christmas card for 2017. |
SnowflakesSnowflakes is the biggest of the Holiday Category. I enjoy the symmetry of it. I’m told snowflakes only have 6 points (the internet says it so it must be true – wink wink) so I have tried to stay with that. |
PlantsFlowers are my favorite and it’s also my biggest category. I’ve broken it up into 5 groups. This group is Flowers and everything that didn’t fit one of the other categories. These designs are anywhere from 1/2 inch to 14 inches tall. Some are all paper, some have wires or beads. |
CactusThese cactus are one of my favorites and everyone loves them. They range from 1/2 inch tall to 2.5 inches tall. The pots they are in are from less than 1/2 inch – see the copper pot – to 1.25 inches in diameter. They are all made of paper, including the blossoms. The copper pot – from Bisbee, AZ, is the first cactus I made. The black box it is sitting on is 1 inch square which will give you a sense of size. |
Plants – Everything is PaperAll of these plants are 100% paper. This includes the pots and the stands. I may have added some birds or seashells, but the plants are all paper. |
Micro-Mini PlantsThese are some of the cutest ones. When I say micro mini, I mean tiny, tiny, tiny. As you can see by the image, that pot, plant and leaves all made of paper are sitting on a standard quarter. Some of the pots are wood and are 1/2 inch tall or in diameter. |
Punch Art PlantsThese are flowers and plants made from a craft punch. I take several punch designs and combine them to make various flowers. |
PlaquesPlaques give me the most chance to be creative. The plaques below are from 2 inches long all the way up to 10 x 13. I enjoy mixing mediums, using punch flowers, quilling, fringe flowers and adding small adornments like doves, beads and such |
MobilesThe mobiles are very popular. I started with a plain top then changed to a partially quilled top. The blue angels were created for a NAQG competition and I’m proud to say it took 3rd Place. I had fun creating the humming birds, dragonflies, cats and angels to create into mobiles. They are about 12 inches tall. |
Note CardsNote cards are a way to express your ideas in a relatively small format. They are fun to give to friends and loved ones who often frame them, not only for the beauty but because of the sentiment with which it was given. |
FramedThese are framed pieces. I think that the framing helps finish the piece as well as protect it. They vary in size from 4 x 6 up to 11 x 14. |
Misc. QuillingThis category contains anything that didn’t neatly fit into the other categories. Most are my designs, however, some are from classes and books as I learned how to do quilling. The medium varies from small refrigerator magnets, straw hats, to window sun catchers to small mirrors, free standing and even some trials with resign that look good in pictures but have flaws when viewed in person. In 2008 Pat Caputo produced a calendar with Accord Publishing by getting submissions from friends and NAQG members. I was lucky enough to have 2 pieces selected. One was the hummingbird mobile and the other was the dragonfly mobile. One of my dragonflies even made the cover of the box. |

Close-up DetailsThese are close-up images of a single piece of a design. With these images, you can see how I put them together. |

Art of a Different KindThere are times when I want to branch out into other mediums and those I have put here. I really enjoyed painting the little plaster Christmas ornaments. Picking different colors and paint types was fun. I tried something I saw in a book. I took shredded paper from our paper shredder and basically glued them to various bowl shapes, then painted them. It was messier and more work than I expected but I think they turned out well. I made some cheesecloth ghosts and of course had to decorate them. I made some yarn puppies that turned out to be adorable. I ventured into Polymer Clay to make some Mustang earrings, necklaces and hair barrettes. First I made a prototype of felt and glitter foam to get the size right. I have even done counted cross-stitch. It took about a year to finish this one as I didn’t work on it steadily. |
